1. Northwest

Northwest's incorporation service starts at just $29 plus state fees; it includes Maine LLC filing, premium registered agent services, customer privacy protection, online document dashboard, free mail forwarding, and more.

Northwest is known for its top-notch customer service; they provide their clients with Corporate Guides, who are highly trained US-based support agents. Every customer gets a Corporate Guide assigned to their specific account, so you can talk to the same person if you have any questions or concerns.

Pros

  • Positive customer reviews
  • User-friendly online ordering process
  • No hidden fees or “free trials” that cost money later on
  • Professional US-based customer service representatives

2. Tailor Brands

Although Tailor Brands offers three different Maine LLC formation services, we think the top-tier Elite package is where the company really shines. For $199/year plus state fees, you get access to some of the better branding tools available from business formation service providers.

With the Elite package, you can take advantage of Tailor Brands’ logo maker – one of the better you will find. The package also includes a business card creator and a social media post tool. Using these tools, you can enhance your online presence to maximize your marketing efforts.

Pros

  • Great premium package
  • Includes AI-driven branding tools
  • Industry-leading logo maker

Cons

  • Not the best choice for those on a budget

3. ZenBusiness

ZenBusiness has a good reputation for LLC formation services in Maine. It offers quality business formation services at three price tiers ($0, $199/year, and $299/year), all plus state fees.

The least expensive package from ZenBusiness is a pretty good deal because it is so low cost – although it doesn’t include any registered agent service. The other, more expensive packages, don’t include some of the features that we like the most from other companies (like Tailor Brands’ branding tools).

Pros

  • Company has a good reputation
  • Includes worry-free compliance services
  • Offers a $0 plus state fees option

Cons

  • More expensive packages don’t have as many features as some competitors

4. Incfile

Incfile is a strong contender for the best affordable business formation service. The most basic plan from Incfile only costs $0 plus state fees, which is affordable as it gets. It also includes a year of registered agent service, which you won’t find everywhere.

No business formation service is perfect, however. Incfile is limited in add-on services like legal services, so if you need those you should look elsewhere. It is also known for having slower customer service response times than competitors.

Pros

  • $0 plus state fees to form a company
  • Includes a year of registered agent service
  • Good budget option

Cons

  • Can take time to get in touch with customer service

How to Form an LLC in Maine

You can start an LLC in Maine on your own in five easy steps:

1. Name Your Company

You won’t be able to form your enterprise until you actually name it. Be sure to follow the LLC naming rules that are outlined in the Maine naming requirements.

Then, make sure the name you want isn't already taken by doing a Business Entity Search on the Maine Secretary of State website.

We also recommend using our LLC Name Generator tool to help secure a domain name for your venture.

2. Choose a Registered Agent

You are required to designate a registered agent for your Maine LLC, which is an individual or business entity in charge of receiving legal documents, government correspondence, and more on behalf of your company.

Download the Certificate of Formation, fill out the required fields, and submit a physical copy with the Secretary of State. You’ll be asked to provide your registered Agent’s information near the bottom of page 2.

Learn more by reading our guide on Maine registered agents.

3. File the Certificate of Formation

To register your company, you will need to file Form MLLC-6 - Certificate of Formation with the Secretary of State. You can only apply by mail.

Learn more with our Maine Certificate of Formation guide.

4. Create an Operating Agreement

An operating agreement is a legal document that outlines the ownership structure and operating procedures of your LLC.

In Maine, LLCs are required to have an operating agreement per Revised Statutes Section 1531.1.B of the state's legal code. Maine refers to the operating agreement as the limited liability company agreement.

5. Get an EIN

You can think of an Employer Identification Number as a Social Security number for your venture. Get one for free through the IRS website
